Elderly patrol neighbourhood ( 2003-09-15 17:10) (China Daily) An anti-crime group, made up entirely of volunteers over the age of 60, is patrolling the Fengyuan neighbourhood in the Liwan District. More than 240 elderly residents have registered to participate, the oldest being 94, says Guangzhou Daily. "We do not try to chase or tackle criminals. But when they know we're watching them, they are more reluctant to start trouble," said Chen Jieyu, a team leader. Anyone who looks suspicious is questioned. If necessary, the elderly patrol members shout for help. With security guards and policemen blocking the exits, it is hard for the bad guys to escape despite the many small lanes, said Huang Nan, 80. The residents are proud of the security of their neighbourhood, which has witnessed a drop in crime since the team was established. "Many of us wanted to look out for our neighbours but were afraid of
appearing nosy," said 74-year-old Chen Huai, whose dilemma was solved when he
joined the patrol.
