Father, son cheat life-insurance firm ( 2003-09-18 13:56) (China Daily)
A father and son have received jail terms for swindling more than 110,000
yuan (US$13,250) in an insurance fraud, reports Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.
Liu, a native of Fujian Province, bought a 110,000-yuan life insurance policy
in Shenzhen for his wife in February 2001 after she was diagnosed with liver
cancer.
When she died in May of that same year, Liu and his son forged a certificate
from the village committee stating that Liu's wife had died of a heart attack.
They also made fellow villagers lie when the insurance company sent an
investigator out to look into the woman's death. But the insurance company
received a call reporting the fraud after compensating Liu with the 110,000
yuan.
Liu was sentenced to three years in prison, his son will serve 1.5
years.
