Two robbers sentenced to jail terms for 10 yuan theft
( 2003-09-22 16:36) (Agencies)

A local court in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, south China, has sentenced to jail two men who robbed merely 10 yuan (about 1.2 US dollars) from a pedestrian this summer.

On May 8, at about 7:00 p.m., the pair, whose surnames were only disclosed as Lin and Li, allegedly tricked the passerby, with the surname of Hu. Li pretended to bump into Hu and broke a bottle of glucose in front of the victim. They then demanded the victim compensate.

The victim told them he had brought nothing but 10 yuan. They did not believe him and beat him, but they finally realized he was not lying.

The pair was caught by plainclothes police on the spot, when they pocketed money and tried to flee the scene.

The People's Court of Luohu District sentenced Lin to three and a half years and Li to three years of imprisonment.
