China wins 19 golds in Asian athletics ( 2003-09-24 11:30) (Xinhua)
The four-day 15th Asian Athletics Championships ended in Manila on Tuesday as regional powerhouse China bagged the most 19 of the total 43 gold medals offered. China competed in 32 of the 43 events in the championships, which featured some 1,500 athletes from 43 countries and regions of the 45-member Asian Athletics Association (AAA). The other two AAA members of Bhutan and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea failed to participate in the event. On Tuesday, China grabbed six of 17 golds at stake and created three meet records. In the women's 20km walk race, China's Ha Mingming bagged gold in one hour and 31.47 seconds, surpassing the meet record of 1:36:57 created by China's Gao Kelian last year in Colombia, Sri Lanka. Huang Xiaoxiao triumphed in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 55.66 seconds, renewing the championships record of 55.80 set by China's Li Rui in 1998 in Fukuoka, Japan. The Chinese team composed of Chen Lisha, Zhang Xiaoyuan, Huang Xiaoxiao and Bu Fanfang won the women's 4X400m relay, clocking three minutes and 31.30 seconds, a new meet record. Ma Ning snatched the women's javelin throw gold in 57.05 meters while Wang Zhouzhou took the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.23 meters. The Chinese foursome of Shen Yunbao, He Jun, Yang Yaozu and Chen Haijian were
crowned in the men's 4X100m relay in 39.22 seconds.
