Soccer-Classy Roma crush Vardar 4-0 in UEFA Cup
( 2003-09-25 11:36) (Agencies)

AS Roma opened their UEFA Cup campaign by outclassing Macedonian side Vardar 4-0 in a first round, first leg match at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday.

Goals from Traianos Dellas (12), Daniele De Rossi (20), John Carew (54) and Marco Delvecchio (90) were a fair reflection of Roma's domination throught the one-sided match.

Even without their usual strike partnership of Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano -- both of whom started on the bench -- Roma easily controlled a first half in which Vardar failed to manage a single shot on goal.

The home side took the lead when defender Dellas connected with midfielder Gaetano D'Agostino's corner, looping a header into the top right of Vardar goalkeeper Gogo Jovcev's net.

Eight minutes later they added a second as Dellas sent a long ball over the top of the defence to midfielder Daniele De Rossi, who timed his run to perfection, brought the ball down and chipped it over Jovcev.

Roma's dominance continued after the interval as Norway striker John Carew -- a close season signing from Valencia -- struck with a powerful header and Marco Delvecchio wrapped up the victory with the last kick of the match.

Roma coach Fabio Capello was delighted with the performance, especially from younger players like De Rossi and D'Agostino.

"We've got plenty of players capable of competing at this level," he told reporters. "The most important thing is to gel as a group. We've set off well, let's hope it continues."

Roma's first European win at home since they beat Barcelona in February 2002 leaves them with a seemingly routine task in the second leg of the tie on October 15.
