Zambian baby with four legs dies
( 2003-10-10 15:45) (Agencies)

The baby who was born with four legs three months ago died at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka Wednesday from a blood infection disease known as septicemia, local newspaper Daily Mail reported Friday.

In addition to the four legs, the baby was ,after investigations, found with three kidneys and two livers.

UTH Head of Pediatric Department Professor Lupando Munkonge was quoted as saying Thursday at a press briefing that the death of the child, Luyando Hampopwe, had nothing to do with the disfigured condition.

Luyando was being kept at UTH while waiting to be operated on.

UTH Managing Director Trackson Lambart said the operation had not yet been carried out on Luyando because she was under age.

Lambart said operations of such nature were usually conducted at the age of between four to nine months but the baby was only three months.

A scan done revealed the brain, neck, lungs, intestines, heart and two of the kidneys were in normal position while the third was in the pelvis.

UTH officials had said that there was no need for Luyando to be sent abroad for an operation as there was enough equipment and expertise to carry out the operation.
