Stanford economist named head of Hong Kong university ( 2003-10-13 15:47) (Agencies) The Chinese University of Hong Kong on Monday appointed
Stanford University economist Lawrence Lau as its next leader.
Lau, who specializes in Asian economies, has agreed to serve a six-year term
beginning July 1, 2004, the Hong Kong university said in a statement.
The 58-year-old scholar is a US citizen who spent his early years in Hong
Kong before studying in the United States, where he has remained since, local
television reported.
Lau's predecessor, Arthur Li, left last year to become the territory's
education and manpower secretary.
