Computer expo starts in southern province ( 2003-10-13 20:36) (Xinhua)
The fifth Dongguan International Computer Information and Product Expo opened Monday in Dongguan City, south China's Guangdong Province. The Expo, first held in 1999, has attracted 470 producers of computers and related products from over 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. Organizers said the expo, which is scheduled to end on Oct. 17, features displays of computers and related products, telecommunications and network products, digital products and technologies, and electronic parts. It is expected that purchasers from over 30 countries and regions, such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions and Taiwan Province, will attend. The annual expo has become a major event in Dongguan, a major electronic and information center in south China. The city is home to more than 3,000 enterprises manufacturing computer and peripheral items. These enterprises contributed to over half of the city's total industrial value in 2002. Last year, exports of Dongguan totaled 23.74 billion US dollars with computer enterprises contributing 47.9 percent. Dongguan registered the third highest exports for a Chinese city last year, following Shenzhen and Shanghai. Over 95 percent of computer parts can be produced locally.
