Symposium on Chinese dietary culture opens in Sichuan ( 2003-10-17 21:46) (Xinhua)
The eighth symposium on Chinese dietary culture opened Friday in Chengdu,
capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, with the theme of the history of
Chinese dietary culture and research on food production.
Experts and scholars from 12 countries and regions, including the United
States and Britain, attended the three-day event. They will discuss topics,
including folklore, anthropology, history, archeology and sociology.
A special program is a discussion on soybean food and its history, initiated
by Sidney W. Mintz, a leading professor at Johns Hopkins University, and 10
other experts. They will probe the influence and significance of soybean food on
the dietary culture in East Asia.
The symposium has received wide and positive responses during previous
sessions in Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo and elsewhere.
