The Fifth West Lake Exposition opened Friday in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province.

Grand art performances were staged at the opening ceremony for the annual event at the Yellow Dragon Sports Center, packed by about 60,000 people from home and abroad.

Zhejiang Governor Lu Zushan extended warm welcome to all the guests and said the province will continue its reform and opening-up to the outside world. Zhejiang expects to expand exchanges and cooperation with other provinces as well as other countries and regions in the world, he said.

The expo, aimed at promoting Hangzhou and Zhejiang, is scheduled to close on November 8.

The State Tourism Administration sent a telegraph to extend its congratulation to the organizing committee, wishing the expo a great success.

The first West Lake Expo was held in 1999. West Lake is a popular tourist destination in Hangzhou.
