Coal mine mudflow leaves one dead, seven missing ( 2003-10-22 16:51) (Xinhua)
One miner died and seven are missing after a mudflow struck beneath the shaft
of a colliery early Tuesday morning in Meihe City, northeast China's Jilin
Province.
The mudflow struck at 5:46 a.m. Tuesday when 19 miners were working on the
platform of the No. 3 shaft at the Meihe Coal Mine administered by the Liaoyuan
Mining Affairs Administration, according to local sources.
The sources said that 11 workers escaped before the mudflow hit. The body of
one miner was found.
A team consisting of officials from provincial coal industry administrative
departments rushed to the site of the accident to organize rescue operations.
Jiao Zhengzhong, deputy governor of Jilin Province, also arrived to give
guidance in the rescue efforts.
By press time, rescue operations were still going on and the cause of the
accident was under intense investigation.
