Chinese gymnastics "special rules" aim at Beijing 2008
( 2003-10-24 23:35) (Xinhua)

China has launched "special rules " in junior gymnastics competitions to train talents for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and will fully implement it on the senior level soon.

Gao Jian, head of the Chinese Gymnastics Association, told Xinhua Friday that "special rules" were observed in this Games' gymnastics competition, in which basic errors, like legs apart in tumbling maneuvers would lead to extra mark deduction.

"That aims to reverse the wrongdoing of some coaches who ignore basic skills and stressed only difficulty in training young talents, " aid Gao, attending the fifth Chinese City Games in Changsha as director of the gymnastics competition commission.

The Chinese City Games, with National Junior Games as its predecessor, is considered a cradle for Chinese sports talents for 2008. The competition program, except Chinese martial arts, is set in conformity with the Olympic Games.

"The rules apply only to junior events at present," Gao said. " but we've decided to introduce it to the senior level next year in the National Championships and other major competitions."

"Basic skill is of great significance to make a real excellent gymnast," he stressed. "Difficulty is based on adequate and regular skills training, which could not be skipped or done over a night."

Gao took over the helm of Chinese gymnastics from Zhang Jian just months ago. He made a successful debut in August when heading the Chinese delegation to the Anaheim World Championships, where Chinese gymnasts grabbed a record five gold medals in the Chinese gymnastic history.
