Concorde, the world's only supersonic airliner, landed at London's Heathrow
airport on Friday for the last time, closing one of the most glamorous chapters
in aviation history.
Travelling at twice the speed of sound across the Atlantic, it roared in from
New York to an emotional welcome.
The sleek, drop-nosed jet, packed with celebrities revelling in the ultimate
fast lane for the last time, was greeted by thousands of aviation enthusiasts.
British Airways chairman Lord Marshall, reflecting on Concorde's 27-year
history as an aviation icon, admitted that this marked the end of supersonic
commercial flight "for some considerable time."
