Fifth generator at Three Gorges starts formal operation ( 2003-10-29 09:16) (Xinhua)
The fifth power generator of China 's Three Gorges Project, being built on
the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, was formally connected to the power
grids at 6"With the addition of the generating unit, known as the No. 4 unit, by
6:00 p.m. Tuesday, the Three Gorges Project had generated 3,872 million kW-hours
of electricity since its first generator began operation on July 10 this year.
Launched in 1993 and expected to be completed in 2009, the Three Gorges
Project will be installed with 26 generators, each with a generating capacity of
700,000 kW.
All five generators are working well and the last one to be put into
commercial operation this year, the No. 1 unit, is being installed and is
planned to begin operation in November this year, said Zhang Cheng, director of
the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant.
The Three Gorges Project has begun to pay dividends this year, playing an
important role in flood control, power generation, navigation, water diversion
and environmental protection.
In this year alone, it is expected to supply a total of 6,130 million
kW-hours of electricity to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and the
Central China and East China Power Grids.
