HK schoolchildren participate in essay competition ( 2003-11-04 21:08) (Xinhua) The Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau on
Tuesday invited students to participate in an essay competition on Shenzhou-5,
China's first manned space aircraft.
With "The launching of Shenzhou-5" as its theme, the Chinese essay
competition among students at senior primary to tertiary levels came after the
success of the Shenzhou-5 and the Hong Kong visit by the country's first
astronaut, Yang Liwei, had aroused students' concerns and interests.
"The aim of the competition is to help students better understand the
development of aerospace technology and industry of our motherland and learn the
spirit of perseverance from astronauts," the Chief Curriculum Development
Officer Cheung Wing Hung said.
"It's definitely an invaluable opportunity for students to conduct project
learning," he added.
"The essay competition is also expected to develop a sense of belonging to
the nation among our students and to enhance their commitment to contributing
towards the betterment of our country," he said.
To assist students in searching for related information, the Bureau's moral
and civic education section has uploaded reference materials on aerospace
industry development and the Shenzhou series spacecraft onto its web page.
The competition is co-organized by the Bureau and Hong Kong- based Ta Kung
Pao, with sponsorship from the Chinese History & Culture Educational
Foundation for Youth.
