Soccer-Hao Haidong on verge of China recall
( 2003-11-06 11:33) (Football Asian)

Dalian Shide striker Hao Haidong could well be recalled to the Chinese international side if the unfounded suggestions within the local media are to be believed.

Top scorer of the inaugural AFC Champions League, Hao has constantly been linked to the Chinese international side after national coach Arie Haan had deliberately called up numerous youngsters during the Dutchman’s spell.

Hao had never for a moment tampered with the thought of retirement, most certainly not ruling himself out of a possible recall. With the East Asian Football Federation Championships due to kick-off on December 4, Hao, in his typically outspoken fashion, have pointed towards defending Asian Cup champons Japan for inspiration.

"I am not certain as of yet if I will be recalled to the national squad," said the 32-year-old player-coach at Dalian. "I am fully aware of my own capability and my form early this year was very satisfying. To be able to play so well in the A3 Cup and then taking that same form into the AFC Champions League was definitely delightful.

"If you take a look at our neighbours Japan, you can see that they still have numerous veterans in their side. Some of them are even older than me and does that mean they have no need to breed their youth talent?

"I've always maintained this - the international arena is where countries should use their best players as opposed to helping the untested grow," added the player who has 10 goals in the league thus far, standing in third place as the top-scoring Chinese in the domestic competition.

"To be able to play for your country is not a stamp of approval of your ability, rather a call to play to your best for your country.

"On the international front, we speak of China and China only, not of Hao Haidong nor other any player. All of us represent the country and that in itself is sheer pride."
