HK assistant police commissioner jumps to death
( 2003-11-11 09:35) (China Daily HK Edition)

Hong Kong: Cheung Chi-sum, an assistant police commissioner, died after falling from his flat Monday.

A note was found at the scene, but it did not provide any clue to the reason for his suicide.

The police believe that his death was not connected to his work.

Cheung's body was found lying beside the swimming pool next to his apartment building in Conduit Road in Mid Levels around 2:00 am Monday.

Cheung was certified dead on the spot.

Commissioner of Police Tsang Yam-pui expressed deep shock and grief over Cheung's death. He said he had a very close working relationship with him.

He has extended his sincerest condolences to Cheung's family and offered to do his best to help them overcome the difficulties they are facing.

"Mr Cheung was a dedicated and outstanding officer who has made many valuable contributions to the Police Force," Tsang said.

He described Cheung as a capable officer with wide-ranging experience while paying tribute to his positive working attitude.

Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong and Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee have sent their condolences to Cheung's family.

Cheung, 54, joined the Hong Kong Police as an inspector in 1969. He held a variety of posts during his 34 years of service including duties in the Uniform Branch and as a detective.

He was promoted to his present rank in 1999 and took up the post of assistant commissioner, operations in the police headquarters.

Most recently he held the post of regional commander of Marine Police since November 2001.
