Eight injured in quake in Northwest China ( 2003-11-13 20:41) (Xinhua) As of 2:30 p.m. Thursday,
eight people were confirmed injured in the earthquake earlier in the day in
northwest China's Gansu Province with no deaths reported, according to local
officials.
The eight injured, all from Zhongzai Township of Minxian County, have been
hospitalized. Two of them, one old elderly and one child, were in a critical
condition, said Wei Zhirong, secretary of the county committee of Communist
Party of China.
In addition, according to the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau, more
than 10 houses collapsed in the tremor and the bureau has dispatched work teams
to the quake-hit areas for a further investigation.
The earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit the area between
Minxian, Lintan and Jone counties in Gansu at 10"According to the Chinese
seismological monitoring network, the epicenter of the quake, 150 kilometers
south of Lanzhou, capital of Gansu, is located at 34.7 degrees north latitude,
103.9 degrees east longitude.
Minxian County has a population of 440,000, Lintan County 150, 000, and Jone
County 100,000.
On Oct. 25, two earthquakes, measuring 6.1 and 5.8 on the Richter scale, also
rattled areas between Minle and Shandan counties of the province, killing nine
people and injuring 49 others.
