China eyes on over two gold medals ( 2003-11-20 21:16) (Xinhua) China has targeted at more
than two gold medals for the 2006 winter Olympics, a senior sports official said
on Thursday.
"Our task set by the State General Administration of Sports is to win at
least two golds, and we will try to get more," said Lan Li, deputy director of
the Winter Sports Administrative Center.
"We enjoy some advantage, though slim, in short-track speed skating events,
especially in women's 500 and 1000 meters races. We also stand some chance in
figure skating and women's ski jumping," Lan said.
China ended their gold drought in the 2002 winter Olympics, when Yang Yang
(A) scooped golds in women's 500m and 1000m short track speed skating events.
But the 26-year-old Yang is doubtful for 2006 winter Olympics to be held in
Turin, Italy. "She is studying in a university and had not trained recently. So
we are not sure if she will participate in the next Olympics. It depends on her
form," Lan added.
