A Swedish woman received six new organs in a multiple transplant operation,
which set a new medical record in Northern Europe, hospital officials said on
Tuesday.
The woman, who had been suffering from a severe intestinal disease, received
a new liver, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, small intestine and kidney from one
donor after a 20-hour operation on Monday.
The patient, only identified as a woman in her forties, was in stable
condition. And if no rejection happens, she is expected to survive the
operation, said a spokesman for Sahlgrenska hospital in Goteborg, 475 kilometers
southwest of Stockholm. Sahlgrenska Hospital has conducted seven other
multi-organ transplant operations since 1998, when a five-year-old girl received
five new organs in one operation.
