China, Cuba fortify sports cooperation

The Olympic committees of China and Cuba have expressed their will to strengthen the sports cooperation on the way of the Beijing 2008 Olympiad.

This was mentioned during a meeting between the head of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Jose Fernandez, and the Undersecretary General of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Wang Jun, who arrived onThursday evening in the capital.

Wang expressed the wish of his country to help the Cuban sportsso as to obtain "important victories" in Beijing and thanked Cuba for its support to China in obtaining the right to host the Olympic Games in 2008.

"Our heart and support is with you in the gigantic struggle that results from the organization of the Olympic Games in 2008," said Wang, who also is the Director of the Human Resources Department of the State Sports General Administration of China.

Fernandez pointed out that the island will receive the Chinese collaboration in swimming, athletics and weight-lifting, disciplines which are at a high level in China.

He said Cuba could help China, on the other hand, in baseball, softball and boxing, in which the Caribbean country enjoys an outstanding level.

During his stay in this capital, Wang will also meet the President of the National Sports, Physical Education and Leisure Institute, Humberto Rodriguez.

The Chinese official will visit Havana's modern anti-doping laboratory, which recently received certification by the International Olympic Committee to be utilized in world-class competitions.

As well, he will visit the International School of Physical Education and Sports, where 1,369 young students from 71 countriesfrom Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean region are receiving free education.
