Urgent demand for power supply to be met at river cradle
( 2003-12-01 16:42) (Xinhua)

Construction of three hydropower plants and the expansion of two more have been scheduled in the coming three years in Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai province, to give locality access to enough power supply.

The construction work, together with the connection of local power grids, will cost 260 million yuan (31.3 million US dollars) in total.

The Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, which is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and stands an average of 4,000 meters above sea level, has abundant water resources as it cradles the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Lancang- Mekong River flowing from southwestern China to the South China Sea through a vast delta in southern Vietnam.

The huge investment on the hydro-electric power plants includes 230 million yuan (27.7 million dollars) from construction funds of the central government and 30 million yuan (3.6 million dollars) raised locally.

Five of the six counties in Yushu prefecture are short of power supply and the other one has practically no power supply yet, the only county in China so far without power supply.
