Police have detained a suspect for causing an explosion meant as part of a
bank robbery Monday morning, which killed two people and injured 17 others in
northeast China's Liaoning Province.
Yang Changguo, 39, a villager from Xinglongtai Village of the province's
Haicheng city, set off the explosion in front of a bank in a clothes wholesale
market in Xiliu town at 8:05 a.m. Monday, when the bank employees were ready to
bring 220,000 yuan (26,500 US dollars) in cash into the bank, said Luo Ronguang,
director of the city's public security bureau.
Two people died at the site. Another 17 injured were rushed to local
hospital. Doctors said two of them were still in a critical condition and under
intensive treatment.
Most of the victims were stall owners and businessmen who planned to
replenish their stock from the market, said Luo.
Police caught Yang on the spot, and found on him a remote control device for
the explosion and some explosives. Yang confessed that he planned to rob the
bank after the blast.
