NBA: Memphis' Wells scores 16 against Blazers ( 2003-12-08 09:24) (Agencies)
Bonzi Wells scored 16 points against his former Portland teammates, helping the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Trail Blazers 93-79 on Sunday.
Stromile Swift also had 16 points, Lorenzen Wright scored 10, and Earl Watson had a career-high 14 assists.
Wells had 10 points in the final period as the Grizzlies closed with a flourish to keep the Trail Blazers for making a serious challenge.
The Grizzlies had trailed from the opening basket and were 15 down at 8:48 of the second period. The Trail Blazers broke for the half up 50-43.
But Memphis tied the score at 52 on a driving layup by Gasol at 9:36 of the third period.
Gasol was fouled, and Memphis took the lead 53-52 on his foul shot. His three-point play capped a run of eight straight points by Memphis.
The Grizzlies ended the third period up by 69-68 on two foul shots by Swift.
Memphis broke into a 12-2 run early in the final period and was not seriously threatened again.
Portland was led by Zach Randolph with 29 points and 13 rebounds, and Rasheed Wallace with 13 points.
Damon Stoudamire had 11 points and Ruben Patterson had 10.
The Grizzlies started cold, hitting only 33 percent in the first period to Portland's 60 percent.
Miller kept Memphis in the game with 14 points in the first half on 6-of-11 shooting. Randolph hit 7-of-11 for 17 points for Portland in the first half.
Memphis shot 38 percent for the game, while Portland shot 49 percent.
Portland coach Maurice Cheeks was called for two technicals for arguing with
the officials.
