Tianjin launches free matchmaking for handicapped
( 2003-12-08 09:26) (People's Daily)

The northern municipality of Tianjin has set up a matchmaking service for handicapped people this week, aiming at providing free services to handicapped people.

General Manager Liu Jie of the Tianjin Community Service Centerunder the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau, which sponsors the matchmaker, said it's very difficult for the handicapped to find their better halves and "We hope they can get to know more people and find ideal partners through our service."

Though well-reputed matchmakers with large memberships abound in the city, it is still quite hard for certain groups -- particularly the elderly, handicapped and single parents -- to find ideal matches.

Insiders say matchmakers addressing the individual needs of these people are already burgeoning in the highly competitive intermediary service market.

A matchmaking service for single parents has received warm welcome since it was set up in June, 2003, according to Daily News,a Tianjin-based newspaper.

"It has helped several single parents find ideal matches over the past months," said Yu Lixia, head of the Women's Federation inNankai District, sponsor of the matchmaker in downtown Tianjin that also provides vocational training and psychological counseling services to the single parents and help them find jobs.

"After all, they should learn to support themselves and their family before getting married again, and should be confident of their future," said Yu.
