Many Vietnamese poor girls marry Taiwanese ( 2003-12-19 17:12) (Xinhua) By early this year, over
65,000 Vietnamese girls, most of whom are educationally and economically
disadvantaged in the country's Mekong Delta, got married to Taiwanese men.
The number of the brides in China's Taiwan more than doubles that of
Vietnamese guest workers there, local newspaper Pioneer reported on Friday.
According to recent surveys, nearly 10 percent of the bridges are illiterate,
34 percent work as farmers, and over 60 percent are at the ages of 18-21. The
surveys also show that the average age of Taiwanese grooms is nearly 37, and
most of them have low incomes and educational levels.
Vietnam is striving to reduce poverty rates, and to tighten management over
people and organizations involving marriage with foreigners, in a move to help
local girls not fall into victims of unhappy marriages and human traffickers.
