Skater vows to fight for Olympic honor ( 2004-01-01 10:46) (Xinhua)
Twice world figure skating champion Zhao Hongbo said here on Wednesday that he hopes to put his already glittering career to an perfect end by winning an Olympic title at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Zhao, who paired with Shen Xue to win the pairs title at the 2002 and 2003 world championships, said an Olympic gold medal is the only thing he is now seeking. "I have won everything but an Olympic gold medal, and this is the reason that I have not retired," he told Xinhua. "I want to own a perfect career." The 30-year-old Zhao and Shen, 22, who first combined in 1992, finished 5th in the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan and took the Olympic bronze medal four years later in Salt Lake City, the United States. But he is soberly aware of the difficulties to turn his dream into reality. "It's difficult, a small mistake could cost your chance to win. But Shen Xue and I are still working hard. We both feel happy working together for the dream." Zhao said he is likely to quit soon after winning the Olympic champion in two years. "Probably the 2006 Winter Olympic Games will be my last competition," he said. "I have a lot of things to do after retirement. I will study in a foreign country first and then may become a coach."
