Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico beat wild card Christina Wheeler of Australia 6-1, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela took four of the final five games to down Barbara Schett of Austria 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Shinobu Asagoe of Japan also reached the second round, stopping Els Callens of Belgium in the wind 6-3, 6-3.

Top-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, who kept her Auckland ASB title on Saturday, plays Tathiana Garbin of Italy in the first round Monday.
