Massif cracks in Gansu, no casualties caused
( 2004-01-23 09:16) (Xinhua)

A 6-centimeter-wide and 8.9-meter-long crack was reported on a massif in the suburb of Lanzhou City of northwest China's Gansu Province Thursday morning, which affected the safety of 7 residential houses.

Local government has taken immediate response to evacuate nearby residents and no casualties have been caused.

Related departments are still monitoring the geologic developments in the region.

According to a resident in the area, she heard cracking sounds outside her house at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, but didn't pay much attention to it. At 11:00 pm, she went outside to see what happened, but saw a crack on the ground, and the slit grew to 6 centimeters by 2:00 am on Thursday.

One hour after she called the emergency hotline "110", government officials came to site to evacuate residents and conducted investigations.

By press time, residents totaling nearly 100 households have been properly relocated.
