China names top guns for Greek Open table tennis event

China has sent a star-studded line-up, including Ma Lin and Zhang Yining, the world number one in both men's and women's divisions, for the Greek Open table tennis championships set to be held here January 29 to February 1.

Ma will be joined by world No. 2 Wang Liqin, Olympic champion Kong Linghui, newly-crowned Grand Finals winner Wang Hao and youngtalents Chen Qi and Liu Guozheng.

In the men's doubles, China will try new combinations Ma/Chen, Kong/Wang Hao and Wang Liqin/Liu.

In the women's side, Zhang will be accompanied by world champion Wang Nan, Grand Finals winner Niu Jianfeng, young potentials Guo Yue, Guo Yan and come-back veteran Li Ju.

The Greek Open, to be played in the same venue as for the 2004 Olympic Games, has attracted more than 250 players around the world.

World champion Werner Schlager of Austria, Timo Boll from Germany, Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, Jean-Michel Saive of Belgium and Zoran Primorac of Croatia will lead the European men'spaddlers together with Swedish trio Jan-Ove Waldner, Jorgen Persson and Jens Lundqvist to challenge the Chinese.

Greek favorite Kalinikos Kreanga is also among the men's hot contenders.

Top European woman player Tamara Boros of Croatia will try her luck in Athens after she was knocked out in the early rounds at the Croatian Open last week in front of her home fans. Croatian Open.
