A man's life savings of 40,000 yuan (US$4,800) were reduced to ashes during a
fire in Taiyuan, capital of North China's Shanxi Province on Sunday, Taiyuan
Evening News reports.
Xu, who manages a waste collecting and trading agency in the city, hid 50,000
yuan (US$6,000) in the ceiling of his house for fear of theft.
The fire was caused by his careless wife, who forgot about a cooking pot on
the stove while she watched TV at her neighbour's home.
Only a few notes were found after firemen put out the
fire.
