Bangladeshi police were out in force Saturday after firing tear gas and rubber bullets in fierce clashes with student protestors which left 100 people injured.
Students from Jahangirnagar University near Dhaka staged a sit-in across a main road Friday after Kawsar Hossain, the acting head of the English faculty, was knocked off his bicycle and killed by a speeding minibus, witnesses said.
"A second bus hit him as he lay injured on the highway," one witness said, adding that the tutor died of his injuries in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police used tear gas, rubber bullets and batons to clear the highway after the students refused to disperse. They arrested some 40 people after several hours of clashes, newspaper reports said.
A large police contingent was Saturday guarding the area, though the situation was calm, students said.
