Since its inception over 80 years ago, Caterpillar has grown to be the largest maker of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines in the world. Its products, services and technologies fall into three principal lines of business: Machinery, Engines and Financial Products.

Today, Caterpillar has nearly 300 operations in 40 countries. Over half of its sales are outside the United States, solidifying Caterpillar's position as a global supplier and leading US exporter. It also provide rental services through nearly 1,500 outlets worldwide.

Caterpillar reported full-year sales and revenues of $41.52 billion and profit per share of $5.17. Sales and revenues rose 14 percent from 2005, and profit per share was up 28 percent. Caterpillar invested $1.35 billion in research and development in 2006.
