China secured its berth in the second round of Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group II competition after winning the doubles match in its first round tie against the Philippines on Saturday.

China, who had won the opening two singles matches on Friday, now leads 3-0 and has already won the game despite Sunday's reverse singles matches.

China will face the winner between Kuwait and Hong Kong of China.

"They played well today even though there was a setback, but itis normal in the sports," Chinese coach Xie Zhao told Xinhua.

Chinese pair Xu Ran and Lu Hao took the first two sets with scores as 6-3 and 6-1, but encountered stronger resistance in the third from Filipino players Johnny Arcilla and Adelo Abadia.

The home players pulled one set back with 6-3, but Xu/Lu clinched the fourth 6-2.

Philippine tennis team manager Jean Lhuillier said after the match that both Chinese and Philippine players have made great progress but still need more "international exposure".

"I can see them a little nervous," Lhuillier told Xinhua.
