China repatriates 16,282 illegal expats
China had repatriated more than 16,000 foreigners who illegally entered, stayed or worked in China in a five-month campaign launched by the Ministry of Public Security, the ministry revealed Wednesday. The campaign, from Oct. 10 to March 10, was aimed at clamping down on illegal immigration and cross-border crime, the ministry said. Police throughout China had checked hotels, rented houses, factories near borders and public entertainment venues where illegal immigrants were likely to gather. A total of 16,282 illegal immigrants had been repatriated. In one of the largest hauls, police in East China¡¯s Jiangsu Province caught more than 100 Vietnamese women who illegally entered China with the help of an international marriage scam gang early this year. Some 21 suspected organizers and more than 600,000 yuan (US$73,171) were seized, the ministry said, without revealing the nationality of the suspects. Illegal immigration had been on the rise in China in recent years, said the ministry. |
