Jeans helps toon draw comfort
Jermaine Jenas scored a crucial away goal as Newcastle's UEFA Cup quarter-final first-leg clash with PSV Eindhoven ended in a 1-1 draw in Holland.
Gary Speed's long-range effort was saved soon after but PSV were on top and went close on 23 minutes when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink headed just over. The Magpies finally got a foothold when Alan Shearer had a header tipped over but could have lost Titus Bramble just before the interval when the defender appeared to strike Remco van der Schaaf with a swinging arm. He escaped to PSV's disgust and Guus Hiddink's men lost their concentration, allowing Jenas to rise to guide a looping header from Laurent Robert's free-kick into the net. Newcastle rode their luck at the start of the second half when Wilfred Bouma's header crashed back off the bar and Young-Pyo Lee dragged a shot wide. The visitors' first real attack of the half saw Darren Ambrose drive a right-foot shot into the side-netting. But Given's goal came under threat once again on 66 minutes when Kezman produced an acrobatic overhead kick to send a Bogelund cross just over. The PSV pressure was almost constant as time ran out, before Ronald Waterreus comfortably saved Shearer's late long-range effort. |
