Sales of China's software products are expected to hit 210 billion yuan (US$25 billion) this year, a year-on-year jump of 45 percent, according to a senior official with the Ministry of Information Industry.

Of the sales, export will reach US$2.5 billion, he estimated.

Last year, the country's software sales were 160 billion yuan.

There are 8,582 authorized companies engaged in China's software industry, with a workforce exceeding 500,000, including 250,000 software designers, according to Chen Bo, vice director of MII.

Despite the booming number of companies, most of the firms remain weak, today's Eastday.com said.

Only six of them report a yearly sales over 1 billion yuan, it revealed, citing industry insiders.
