Tourist arrivals in China rise in March

China's tourist arrivals in March rose to 8.5516 million, up 8.92 percent over the same period last year, when China's tourism suffered from SARS, sources with the National Tourism Administration said.

The tourist arrivals in March were also an increase of 1.86 percent over the same 2002 period, the statistics show.

According to the statistics, the number of tourists from foreign countries, Hong Kong and Macao reached 1.1022 million, 4.6579 million and 1.5201 million, up 5.72 percent, 2.05 percent and 5.62 percent respectively over the last same period.

Among 16 major tourism source countries, only Japan and Thailand still saw a decline in the number of tourists going to China, while 14 countries achieved a rise and 11 of them reached double-digit growth, the statistics show.

The total tourism income in foreign exchange in March reached US$1.765 billion, up 10.03 percent over the previous same period and 2.87 percent over the same period of 2002, the statistics said.
