Maradona opens eyes, takes liquids
Diego Maradona opened his eyes and began taking liquids after more than a week in intensive care.
A medical update on Tuesday said Maradona's response to his medical treatment was "satisfactory" and that he was breathing on his own.
In a brief statement, Maradona expressed "enormous gratitude for the continual support and affection" of his admirers, some of whom have kept a vigil for more than a week outside the Suizo Argentina Clinic where he is being treated.
Maradona opened his eyes for the first time Monday, the leading-circulation daily Clarin reported. The report said Maradona's former wife, Claudia, and their two teenage daughters were spending time at his bedside.
Maradona was taken off a respirator over the weekend and was breathing without an oxygen mask, his medical team said.
Maradona is most acclaimed for his "Hand of God" goal in which he punched the ball in with his hand against England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 Cup championship before Argentina went on to win the trophy.
Before retiring in 1997, Maradona also led Argentina to the 1990 World Cup final during a 20-year career.
In 2000, FIFA chose him as best soccer player ever, along with Pele. |
