Strong quake sways buildings in Taipei
A strong earthquake shook buildings in Taipei on Saturday, but no damage or casualties were immediately reported. The quake registered a magnitude of 5.8, and was centered on the island's east coast, 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west of the town of Hsincheng, the weather bureau said. Hsincheng lies in the mountainous Hualien region, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of aipei. The quake was felt in most parts of the island, the weather bureau said. Temblors frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and are only felt in the vicinity of their epicenter. They cause little or no damage. However, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan in September 1999
killed more than 2,300 people. |
