AC Milan announce Stam is a done deal
Lazio's Dutch international defender Jaap Stam is to join Italian champions AC Milan, Milan's vice-president Adriano Galliani said on Sunday.
'Stam will sign for Milan tomorrow. On Monday it will be official,' Galliani told Italy's Sky Sport.
The former Manchester United player has been linked with a move to Milan for several months since Lazio said they would be forced to sell him before he entered the final year of his contract. Galliani gave no details but Stam's agent recently said a two-year contract had been agreed. Stam made his name in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven before moving to Manchester United in 1998 where he helped the club win the European Cup a year later. A strong central defender, who has also operated at right-back for Lazio, Stam moved to the Rome club in August 2001 following a reported dispute with United manager Alex Ferguson. Stam will team up with his former Lazio team mate Alessandro Nesta in what looks set to be a formidable back-line with captain Paolo Maldini and Brazil captain Cafu. Milan recently signed French midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo from Olympique Lyon and Galliani said no other deals were planned. 'We have a squad that won the Champions League last season and has just won the 'scudetto' and I think we are fine as we are,' said Galliani, who effectively runs the club on behalf of owner, Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi. |
