American film star Gwyneth Paltrow has given birth to her first child, a daughter named Apple Blythe Alison Martin, a spokesman for husband singer Chris Martin said.

The baby was "born in London, after a long labour, on May 14, and weighed nine pounds 11 ounces (4.34 kilograms), he said, adding that "both mother and baby are very well".

The spokesman quoted Martin as saying: "We are 900 miles over the moon, and we'd like to thank everyone at the hospital who have looked after us amazingly."
