Sino-Uzbekistan relations

I. Review of Bilateral Political Relations

On January 2, 2002, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan respectively sent a message to their Uzbekistan counterparts Karimov and Kamilov congratulating upon the 10th anniversary of the founding of Sino-Uzbekistan diplomatic relations.

From January 19 to 21, 2002, The Chinese delegation headed by State Councilor Simayi Aimait visited Uzbekistan and met with Chairman of Uzbekistan Supreme Assembly Khalilov and Prime Minister Utekur Sultanov. He also attended the activities celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Uzbekistan diplomatic relations.

From January 27 to 30, 2002, Vice Chairman of Uzbekistan Supreme Assembly Bugrilov headed a delegation to China for the attendance at the activities celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Uzbekistan diplomatic relations. Chairman Li Peng of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Vice Chairman of the NPC Tiemar Dawamait, and Vice Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing respectively met with the delegation.

From June 25 to July 3, 2002, Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate Zhang Qiong headed a procuratorate delegation to visit Uzbekistan and held talks with his Uzbekistan counterpart Kadelov.

From October 20 to 31, 2002, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Wei Jianguo visited Uzbekistan with a delegation

From October 25 to November 1, 2002, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council Wang Zaixi visited Uzbekistan.

On March 17, 2003, Uzbekistan President Karimov sent a cable to Chinese President Hu Jintao and Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee Jiang Zemin respectively congratulating upon their successful election.

On March 22, 2003, Uzbekistan Prime Minister Sultanov sent a letter of congratulation to Premier Wen Jiabao upon his election.

On March 24, 2003, Chairman of Uzbekistan Supreme Assembly Khalilov sent a cable to Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Wu Bangguo congratulating upon his election.

On May 29, 2003, President Hu Jintao held bilateral talks with Uzbekistan President Karimov during attendance at the Moscow Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

II. Bilateral Economic and Trade Relations and Economic and Technological Cooperation

From April 25 to 28, 2002, the fourth session of Sino-uzbekistan Joint Economic and Trade Commission was held in Beijing. Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Zhou Keren and Malapubkov, Director of the Bureau of Foreign Economic Coordination of the Uzbekistan's cabinet, co-chaired the meeting.

From April 27 to May 1, 2002, President of the China Import and Export Bank Yang Zilin visited Uzbekistan with a delegation at the invitation of the Uzbekistan Bank for Foreign Economy. Uzbekistan President Karimov met with the Chinese delegation.

On September 10, 2002, Vice Minister Naslov of Foreign Economc Relations and Trade of Uzbekistan led a delegation to Xiamen, Southeast China's Fujian Province, to attend China Investment Fair. The delegation also paid a visit to Shanghai.

From February 13 to 15, 2003, the government economic and trade delegation headed by Vice Minister Zhou Keren of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation visited Uzbekistan and attended the fifth meeting of the Sino-Uzbekistan Economic and Trade Joint Committee between the two governments. Uzbekistan Prime Minister Sultanov, and Gagriyev, Vice Prime Minister and Director of Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Administration, respectively met with the delegation.

According statistics released by the General Administration of Customs of China, the trade volume between China and Uzbekistani in 2002 came to US$120 million, up 126 percent than the previous year. Of the total, China's export was US$ 104 million, import US$27.40 million.

III. Bilateral Exchanges and Cooperation in the Fields of Culture, Science and Technology and Education

On April 12, 2002, ministers of Culture of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members held the first session in Beijing. Minister of Culture of Uzbekistan Chulayev attended the meeting.

From April 15 to 18, 2002, the Chinese delegation, headed by Wu Zhongze, one of the leading member of the Ministry of Science and Technology and representative of the minister, visited Uzbekistan and attended the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of China's Scientific and Technological Day.

From May 15 to 22, 2002, the Uzbekistan delegation headed by Yakupof, Vice Chairman of the Uzbekistan Federation for Labor Unions, visited China.

From June 11 to 15, 2002, Deputy Director of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission headed a delegation to Uzbekistan for a visit.

On December 22, 2002, the Chinese PLA delegation headed by Lieutenant General Zang Wenqing, Vice Commander of the Beijing Military AreaCommand, paid a friendly visit to Uzbekistan.
