Injuries cloud English, Dutch Euro 2004 preparations
Injury bulletins have dominated the build-up of two of the biggest matches in the first round of Euro 2004 as the squads fine-tuned their preparations. Defender John Terry remained doubtful for England's Group B opener against France Sunday with a leg injury and Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf was ruled out of next week's Group D game against Germany with a hamstring problem. Terry sat out a training session in Lisbon with a heavily strapped thigh and England looks likely to face the defending champion with a makeshift central pairing of Sol Campbell and Jamie Carragher. Seedorf underwent a scan that revealed his hamstring injury was more serious than originally thought. The 28-year-old will be out of action for a week and Dutch coach Dick Advocaat said there were no plans to call up a replacement. Another midfielder, Italy's Gennaro Gattuso, vented his frustration at being left on the fringes of the Azzurri team, shattering the peace that had surrounded Giovanni Trapattoni's squad. |
