Intel to advance wireless technology in China Chip giant Intel announced it has signed an agreement with Dalian and Chengdu to install Wimax equipment in the Chinese cities.The terms of the agreements were unknown. The memoranda of understanding have outlined plans to deploy network infrastructure to take advantage of next-generation WiMAX broadband wireless technology. Also known as 802.16, the standard provides a wireless alternative for last-mile broadband connectivity to businesses and homes. The announcement was made by an Intel Asia bigwig, but the specific terms of the agreements were not disclosed. Dalian and Chengdu are the first two Chinese cities to have the technology. WiMAX is described by Intel as "the big brother of Wi-Fi". It is considered the next step beyond Wi-Fi because it is optimized for wide are broadband operation, both fixed and mobile. |
