Construction work on a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 140 kw started recently in Xingxingxia Town, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The photovoltaic power plant, built with 220 million yen (US$2 million) of free aid from the Japanese government, is expected to go into operation in February 2005.

The plant is expected to serve more than 70 local businesses and more than 2,000 residents.

Xingxingxia, situated on the border of neighboring Gansu province, has been in need of stable power supply.
