About 400 million tons of coal was transported by rail from January to May this year in China, up 11. 7 percent year on year, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Railways.

Coal shortage has been reported since late last year due to rising domestic demand as the economy has been growing at high speed in China, which relies heavily on coal for energy supply.

Major coal producers are making all-out endeavors to guarantee coal supply for the booming industrial sectors, especially power plants.
