10,000 Macao citizens join in 'Health City' Campaign Over 10,000 Macao citizens were mobilized in a ten-minute physical exercise Sunday to commence a campaign for the World Health Organization-entitled "Healthy City" project in Macao. Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) Ho Hau Wah and Shigeru Omi, the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional director, joined the mass exercise, which was regarded by Omi as one of the largest mobilization of citizens for the Health City project of the Western Pacific Region. Omi told Xinhua that with the mass campaign, the Macao SAR government has assured him of the highest political awareness and concern for meeting WHO's criteria for a "Health City." Macao certainly took a lead in an alliance of 30 cities in the Western Pacific Region to echo the WHO's "Health City" project, which includes Shanghai as well as cities in Mongolia, the Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea, he said. Omi held that Macao citizens already enjoy a relatively high standard of health in the region. However, he warned that in a highly globalized environment, a tourist haven like Macao must continuously improve its capacity to deal with the health risks that inevitably follow a large influx of visitors every year. Macao's outstanding achievement in the epidemic control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was highly commended by five WHO officials, who paid visits to the city last year. Omi suggested the Macao SAR government apply for the "Healthy City" appraisal during his visit here last July, which he said would be a right time for Macao to showcase its image as a healthy and safe tourist city. |
