About 400 football fans scuffled with police in south London late Sunday, following England's dramatic 1-2 loss to France in their Euro 2004 championship opener in Portugal.

The serious disturbance, which lasted an hour, erupted in Croydon near London shortly after the final whistle, while there were other smaller ones across the capital.

Fourteen people were arrested after bottles were thrown, two officers injured and several police vehicles damaged in Croydon.

"I deplore the level of violence that we have seen in Croydon tonight," Superintendent Nick Jupp said in a statement.

The trouble broke out after France's Zinedine Zidane struck twice in injury time to overturn England's first-half lead.

In Lisbon, police who had been braced for trouble after the match said the night had been quiet with just one fan arrested.
