Shandong to invest in environmental protection Shandong Province, East China, plans to invest 360 billion yuan (US$43.3 billion) in the next six years, boasting to build the largest environmental-protection industry in the country. According to a source with the provincial environmental protection bureau on Friday, the money, part allocated by local government with the rest from enterprises and society, will be mainly used for ecosystem construction and pollutant disposal. Environmental protection constitutes a new and developing business in Shandong, with the relative investment making up less than five percent of its gross domestic product (GDP), which had reached to 1,200 billion yuan (US$144.5 billion) last year. Meanwhile, numerous environment-related key projects, at state level, are located in Shandong province, including the South-North Water Diversion Project, as well as harnessing projects in the Huaihe River reaches and Bohai rim area. A forum on ecosystem construction and an international expo on "green industry" development are expected to be held by the local government from Sept. 16 to 18 in Qingdao,a noted port city and a tourist attraction in the province. |
